Children’s activities announced as Penola Show nears

ON TARGET: Ewan Wilson, 2, puts in some practice ahead of the Penola Show’s boot throwing competition. The novelty event is open to children under 12 years old across three divisions, with the longest under-arm throw receiving a $20 prize.

CHILDREN across the region are putting their best boots forward in the lead up to the Penola Show gumboot throwing competition.

The competition is one of the many events aimed at children at this year’s event.

Organiser Kinta Wilson said she thought of the idea after remembering taking part in similar competitions at a young age.

“I remember having so much fun throwing a gumboot at the local show when I was little,” she said.

“It’s a simple little competition to get them excited about the show and outside enjoying the world.”

The event, sponsored by the Penola and District Business and Tourism Association, is free to enter and features three different age groups – under five, under eight and under 12 years old.

Children will have a chance to try their hand at the sport with different sized gumboots for each group.

The rules are simple, competitors have to throw their boot as far as possible under-arm from a designated point.

“Gumboots will be supplied for each age group so it is all fair,” Ms Wilson said.

“It is a bit of fun and there is even a $20 prize on offer, which is exciting for the kids.”

In addition to the gumboots, there are other events for children, including paper plane, Lego and best decorated shoe competitions.

“The paper plane competition has some pretty big prizes, which is exciting,” Ms Wilson said.

“Penola Primary School runs its own competition each year so the show gives children another chance to fine tune their paper plane skills.”

The ever popular Lego competition is back again and open to people of all ages.

Participants can either choose to follow instructions on their Lego boxes or go rogue with a custom design.

This year will also see the addition of the best decorated shoe competition.

Children submit their most creative crafted shoes as part of the event.

“We try to put something new on every year for the kids and they all seem to enjoy it,” Ms Wilson said.

“My kids will all be taking part in the events so hopefully we can get a little bit of competition going on.”

The Penola Show will be held October 26 and 27.
