Wilkin Hall milestone celebration

PROUD CELEBRATION: Wilkin Community Hall committee members Ian Ross, Robbie Greene, Breda Cash, Carol Baulch, Josh Crowe, Jean Greene, Phyllis Johnston, Noel Baulch, Chris Ross and Jason Ross prepare to celebrate the anniversary of the building.

HISTORY will be rekindled this month when South East community members celebrate Wilkin Community Hall’s 70th anniversary.

Midway between Mount Gambier and Casterton, Wilkin Hall is nestled in a beautiful valley carved by the Glenelg River.

The building’s history is marked with memorabilia at the site, from its opening in 1881 as the Wilkin School, which closed 50 years ago, through to ongoing community use.

Over a barbecue lunch, the audience will enjoy company of present and past Wilkin community hall associates and previous school students, opting for a socially active event.

“For your enjoyment, the Wilkin hall committee has collated an extensive display of the past, its students, surrounding flora and fauna and historical events the hall showcased,” Wilkin Community Hall chairman Noel Baulch
said.

The hall also offers a unique native plants experience with the surrounding Wilkin Flora and Fauna Reserve blooming with some of the most impressive native orchids and wild flowers in south eastern Australia.

“Anyone who has a connection with the hall is welcome to come along for the special event,” Mr Baulch said.

From morning to night, the event on October 14 is expected to be an enjoyable occasion for all involved.

Camping facilities are available by contacting 0408 529 938, along with a barbecue and afternoon tea.

The hall is situated on Wilkin School Road, just off Grubbed Road, south off the Mount Gambier – Casterton Road.
