Pioneers supported in basketball fight

MOUNT Gambier residents have come out in support of The Pioneers as the prominent basketball club fights for its future.

The team is awaiting confirmation on whether it will continue to exist in the new Victorian basketball league.

The sporting team has been the face of basketball in Mount Gambier since 1988, competing in the Men’s South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL).

While Basketball Australia has announced the league will be disbanded, readers of The Border Watch have commented on our stories about the saga online to show their support.

Kirsty Harvey: Is there something the community members can do to get our voices heard? Letters or petitions?

Robbie Stewart: Elevate the pioneers to National Basketball League status.

Matthew Markiewicz: It is such a shame that Basketball Australia stuff up everything they touch. Thank goodness the NBL is independently run.

Bruce Chalmers: The damage is affecting Tasmania now and at this stage Tassie is on the outer as well.

Scott Lampshire: Absolute joke from Basketball Australia to let this happen. One of the most successful clubs in a great league.

Donna Smith: It will be a complete tragedy if our boys cannot play in a competition. We are behind them all the way.

Jo Lee Cole: I have rallied around and got all our friends in Adelaide sharing the post and supporting too. We will be behind you 100pc.

Michael Yates: Hopefully the Pioneers can play in the supposed Victorian Premier League. We need great basketball clubs to stay around to help grow grassroots basketball in this country!

Marion Coote: What on earth do they think they are doing! Absolutely disgraceful decision.
