Fire team call out

READY TO HELP: Wattle Range CFS group operation captain Katrina Hutchesson has put the call out to members of the community to join her team at either the Penola or Millicent base as a volunteer.

WHEN Country Fire Service (CFS) firefighters are on the ground tirelessly responding to incidents, the work of the communications team can often go unnoticed.

They are the people behind the scenes providing critical support to the men and women on the ground and they are looking for more volunteers in Millicent and Penola.

With the fire danger season fast approaching, Wattle Range CFS group operations captain Katrina Hutchesson is calling on people to join the communications team.

“We have two operational bases in Millicent and Penola, which activate during various incidents and we are needing new volunteers to join,” Ms Hutchesson said.

“It is mainly radio operations and computer work with some catering and all the training is done in-house.”

Ms Hutchesson said the role was perfect for anyone over the age of 18 looking to give something back to the community.

“While we do not deal with anyone face to face, whether it is a car accident or a fire, knowing you have helped in some way is very rewarding,” she said.

Ms Hutchesson was quick to dismiss any concerns people may have the role will be too time consuming.

“We recognise everyone has lives, so the amount of hours you can give is up to you,” she said.

“Any amount of help is appreciated – it really is whatever you can give, we do not want it to be a burden on anyone’s life.”

Wattle Range CFS group officer Fred Stent said communications roles may have not been promoted enough in the past.

“People who don’t want to go fighting fires, they do not realise there is an opportunity here to play a great role in our organisation,” Mr Stent said.

“It is a way to support your local community and help and assist when incidents occurs.”

Even though the role involves working behind a computer or on a radio, Mr Stent said it was still a vital job.

“Without their guidance, we would be floundering out on the job,” he said.

“You will do all sorts of things to assist during major and minor incidents.”
