THE waste transfer station on Eucalypt Drive will start taking useful donations of unwanted items from Monday for sale at the Mount Gambier ReUse Market when it opens later this year.
Mount Gambier City Council environmental sustainability officer Aaron Izzard said the facility would take a variety of quality items suitable for a new home.
“From Monday next week, you can drop off your good quality items to the waste transfer station,” Mr Izzard said.
“They must be clean and in a good condition and what will or will not be accepted for the market will be at the discretion of the transfer station operators.”
Council has encouraged residents to sort their waste loads to save time and money before visiting the waste transfer station.
Residents can save on fees by making a few small changes to the way their loads are packed.
“Sorting your load and saving money is relatively simple by placing similar items together when you are packing your ute or trailer,” Mr Izzard said.
“The sort and save initiative will aime to reduce the volume of re-usable and recyclable materials entering landfill through mixed loads.
“Many items can be dropped off for free, including items for the market, televisions, computers and liquid paint.
“If these are placed in separately and can be easily taken off first, residents will save money on fees as they will only be charged for the remainder of their load.”
