Liberals Cabinet at odds with Bell bill

PRODUCTIVE MEETING: Limestone Coast Protection Alliance members Sophie Henke, Merilyn Paxton and chair Angus Ralton discuss the upcoming bill to enshrine the South East fracking ban in legislation with Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell.

UNPRECEDENTED criticism of the State Government’s existing ministerial-directed decade-long fracking ban has failed to deter a defiant Liberal Cabinet from the belief it is strong enough to withstand a change of government.

Ahead of Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell’s second reading of amendments to the mining act, Mining Minister Dan van Holst Pellekaan was non-committal on supporting the bill.

In a one-line statement, Mr van Holst Pellekaan said the Marshall Liberal Government had already delivered on its election commitment through its cabinet-approved moratorium.

Earlier this week, the Mount Gambier branch of the Liberal Party called on its elected members to back Mr Bell’s bill, which will be debated on Wednesday.

Despite being at odds with his federal colleagues, Liberal MP Tony Pasin recently wrote to each State Cabinet minister requesting they consider enshrining the moratorium in law.
