Police raid uncovers firearm trafficking operation

Three South East residents have been remanded in custody for serious firearm trafficking offences following a police raid on a house in Tantanoola over the weekend.

The prosecution said the three defendants were arrested following a raid on the Tantanoola home on Saturday.

Noel Wadsley, 35, Matthew Bukovskis, 33, and Brianna Reilly, 24, appeared in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court yesterday, where their defence counsel made no application for bail.

During a search of the premises, officers located seven firearms – shotguns and rifles – which were acquired illegally.

The firearms were unsecured and found in various locations throughout the house, including a bedroom cupboard, a hallway cupboard and under a quilt on the bedroom floor.

One rifle was found loaded with a magazine attached.

Numerous ammunition and firearm accessories were also found scattered throughout the house.

The prosecution said a phone was also seized, which showed various firearms and contained pictures of the defendants holding the weapons.

Alarmingly, the court heard there were a significant number of firearms in the photographs, which were not located during the search of the house.

“There are a number of outstanding firearms,” the prosecution said.

None of the defendants held firearm licences permitting them to be in possession of the weaponry.

Defence counsel for each defendant made no application for bail, however indicated they may ask to have the matter called on in the near future.

Magistrate Teresa Anderson adjourned the matter and each defendant was remanded in custody.

Reilly was supported by family in the court gallery and was visibly upset throughout proceedings.

Wadsley and Bukovskis showed little emotion as they were led from the court.
