JAMES Morrison Academy students have formed a 17-piece big band set to perform at the Mount Gambier Community RSL on Father’s Day.
Leader Harrisson Ball said the band was inspired to expose the city’s jazz scene to the wider community.
“The inspiration for the band was to try to connect the community more with the jazz that goes on at academy,” Mr Ball said.
“Not many people are aware of the jazz club that’s down the road – they have a band playing there nearly every night, but our plan is to perform at other places like the RSL and hopefully The Barn if this gig goes well.”
“I thought it would be nice to have a gig to bring families together, which is why we decided on Father’s Day – that will be the theme of the night.”
The band will play music from the ’40s and ’50s in two 45-minute sets.
“We will play music through the swing era with Ella Keysell of Ekki and the Scatterbrains as our vocalist,” Mr Ball said.
The big band will perform at the RSL on September 2 from 7pm.
Attendees can choose a seated option with dinner provided.
