Sound solo performance

PENOLA VOICES SHINE: Penola Primary School students Grace and Emily were awarded solo positions as part of this year’s South East Primary Schools Music Festival.

THREE talented Penola students will take centre stage later this year to perform solo pieces as part of the vibrant South East Primary Schools Music Festival.

Penola Primary School students Grace and Emily along with Mary MacKillop Memorial School Student Hailee will all be performing solos after securing a spot at the event.

To receive the highly sought after positions, the students ensured they dedicated time to perfecting their chosen songs before sending off their tapes to be selected.

“I really enjoy singing because it gives you a chance to express yourself,” student Grace said.

“It is a really good emotional release.”

Grace will be performing the song Djapana, meaning “sunset dreaming”.

“It is a nice song and it was pretty difficult to learn as it was in a different language,” she said.

Student Emily will perform the tune Niina Waathangku? translating to “where are you from?”

“I really enjoy performing, which is funny because I dislike speaking in front of people, but I am not afraid to sing,” she said.

Penola Primary School choir teacher Nicole Lear said she was proud of the students’ achievements.

“The girls were up against many other students trying out for the same positions, so their dedication and hard work is to be applauded,” Ms Lear said.

The students will continue to practice their performances ahead of the three-day event beginning on October 23.
