SIGNIFICANT progress is expected on development of the communal Penola Town Square space with $61,000 allocated in the Wattle Range Council budget this financial year to move the plans forward.
Penola Town Square Working Group chair Catherine Robinson said the council’s contribution would assist with infrastructure developments such as electrical lighting and locally-made red gum and concrete tables and benches.
“The area will also be wheelchair accessible, with new benches allowing access on both sides,” Ms Robinson said.
“It is all slowly coming together and it is fantastic we have received the funding after a lot of hard work.”
Ms Robinson said the aim of the square was for the space to be welcoming and provide a communal meeting area equipped to host pop-up markets and attractions.
A portable stage allowing for performances and free Wi-Fi is also on the group’s agenda to provide opportunities to expand activity as part of the region’s festivals and other events.
“Its aim will draw people to the centre of the town,” Ms Robinson said.
The commemorative pavers – recognising those who actively served in war or armed conflicts over the past 100 years – will continue to be an ongoing memorial in partnership with the Returned and Services League at the square.
“We are working through the commemorative pavers etching process,” Ms Robinson said.
She said the square would not be possible without obtaining various grants.
“We have received allocations from the Veterans SA Anzac Commemoration Grant, the FRRR Small Grants for Rural Communities and the Penola and District Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank,” she said.
“This also includes sponsorship from the Penola Lions Club, Terra Rossa Country Women’s Association Branch, the Penola Men’s Shed and many local businesses.”
