YOUNG tradespeople from the South East had success on the east coast when they attended the WorldSkills Australia National Championships earlier this month.
Seven TAFESA students from the South East headed to Darling Harbour to proudly showcase their skills at the prestigious trade competition.
Jayden Ballintyne (electrical installation), Mitchell Muller (cabinet making), Angus Altschwager (fitting), Taylah O’Brien (graphic design), Joshua Jantosh (turning), Kerry Ham (construction steelwork), Dominic Tucker (welding) and Ashley Tillery (team leader) represented the region in the three-day competition.
They joined over 500 of Australia’s most skilled young tradespeople, who competed in 42 categories of live competitions.
The skilled students earned the right to participate in the national competition after competing in the regional rounds last year.
For the South East, it was a successful event with Taylah walking away with a silver medal, while Kerry, Joshua and Jayden all took the bronze medal home for their respective categories.
It was sustained success for Kerry and Joshua, who both competed in the national competition in Melbourne in 2016 and jointly took out a bronze medal for the engineering team challenge.
WorldSkills Australia has been enabling young people to showcase their trade and skills talents since 1981.
The skills-based competitions operate at regional, national and international levels and are aligned to national training packages, Apprenticeships Australia and Jobs Australia schemes.
The national championship is Australia’s biggest vocational education and excellence competition.
