Crash tears car in two

LUCKY ESCAPE: A Honda sedan was split in two on Tuesday night as it hit a tree at Mount Burr. The Mount Gambier driver was airlifted to the Adelaide hospital.

A VEHICLE collision in the centre of Mount Burr on Tuesday night has left a 25-year-old Penola man with serious injuries in the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

Millicent police said the man was in a serious but stable condition and his injuries were not considered to be life-threatening.

His Honda sedan was ripped in two when it crashed into a tree on Thomas Drive near the general store at about 6pm.

Long-time Mount Burr resident Peter Henderson was one of the first to arrive at the accident scene.

At the time, he was about 250 metres away at the nearby “Mick” and Jean Walker Oval watching the Mount Burr footballers at their regular Tuesday night training.

Mr Henderson told The South Eastern Times a loud noise caught his attention.

“I heard this roar and it sounded a bit like the machinery which has been working in the pines,” Mr Henderson said.

LUCKY ESCAPE: A Honda sedan was split in two on Tuesday night as it hit a tree at Mount Burr. The Mount Gambier driver was airlifted to the Adelaide hospital.

“I knew something was coming and then I heard this almighty bang.

“I jumped in my car and drove to the scene.

“I pulled up and could see half a car in the middle of the road.

“There were already three or four people and I could see the young fella was lying on the ground on his back.”

Mr Henderson asked if anyone knew first aid and one of the bystanders phoned for an ambulance.

It arrived about 10 minutes later and Mr Henderson said the driver was conscious throughout.

“He had a bit of blood on him and they were worried about a fractured arm and damage to his hip.”

“He is a bloody lucky boy.”

Wattle Range Country Fire Service group officer Fred Stent said the impact of the crash caused the driver to be ejected from the vehicle.

Fuel was spilled in the collision and debris was widely scattered across the road and verges.

Thomas Drive was closed to through traffic for over 2.5 hours for the clean-up and related police inquiries.

The accident scene was attended by three SA Ambulance Service crews, the Millicent and Mount Burr CFS and Millicent Police.

The crash took place only 50 metres from the Mount Burr CFS shed in Pettman Terrace.

Millicent Police are investigating the crash and ask anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the Honda sedan before the crash to please contact the Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
