THREE Mount Gambier residents who have dedicated decades to serving the community through various organisations have been celebrated nationally in the 2018 Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Jack Hopgood, Julienne Feast and Libby Furner were named recipients of the prestigious Order of Australia Medal (OAM).
Mr Hopgood, a Japanese prisoner of war during World War II, returned to serve the community extensively through the Mount Gambier Returned and Services League, chamber of commerce and committees focused on beautifying the city.
He was previously acknowledged as Mount Gambier Citizen of the Year in 1995 for his diverse contributions.
Ms Feast has contributed broadly to the community, using her nursing background to help in leadership roles at the Mount Gambier Hospital and volunteering with St John Ambulance Australia.
She has also worked extensively in drug counselling roles.
Ms Furner has long been the face of the Red Cross in Mount Gambier and served the organisation nationally, but also contributed to Rotary, Generations in Jazz and various other organisations, previously being recognised as the city’s citizen of the year in 2016.
Today, we pay tribute to these three dedicated volunteers.
They have all contributed extensively to our community, dedicating themselves to the welfare of others and amenity of the city.
