Autopsy to confirm cause of death

BODY RETRIEVAL: Mount Gambier Police and SES volunteers assess scrubland as they work to retrieve the body of a man found at the base of Potters Point.

POLICE are preparing a report for the State Coroner after the body of a Queensland man was found in scrubland in the Valley Lakes precinct on Saturday afternoon.

Police and the Mount Gambier State Emergency Service (SES) rushed to the western side of the Valley Lakes precinct at around 1.30pm after reports a body had been discovered.

On arrival they located the deceased 30-year-old man at the base of Potters Point and police were quick to rule out any suspicious circumstances in the death.

Mount Gambier Police officer in charge Senior Sergeant Chris King would not speculate on the cause of death until the autopsy was completed.

“We cannot pre-empt anything at this stage, we have to complete the correct process,” Snr Sgt King said.

“An autopsy will be completed and then a report will be prepared for the coroner.”

Mount Gambier SES district officer Simon Poel said it was a confronting scene for the volunteers who attended.

“Our crews were on hand to assist the Mount Gambier Police and they retrieved the body from the scrub,” Mr Poel said.

“It was quite a difficult day for them as the job was quite unique and confronting.”

Reflecting on the work of the Mount Gambier crew, Mr Poel praised all the volunteers who continue to offer their own time to respond to various incidents.

“I am very proud of them because they handle different situations in people’s time of need and they never really know what they will be confronted with until they arrive on scene,” Mr Poel said.

“In the initial aftermath, we followed up to check they were all fine and we offer counselling services or a 24-hour hotline they can call if they are struggling.”
