BREAKING: Green light for ALDI as new plan approved for Fidlers site

MOUNT Gambier City Council has issued development approval for a $6.8m construction project at the Fidler and Webb site, which will include an ALDI supermarket and four retail tenancies.

Council issued the approval for the blueprint yesterday.

The news follows growing speculation the $35m proposed shopping precinct has been axed.

While details from ALDI and developer GLG are due to be announced shortly, it is understood the tweaked plans will not include the Target store.

It is also understood the development will be in the space currently occupied by the mothballed Fidler and Webb building.

The altered plans include the demolition of existing buildings.

Today’s announcement follows Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce and even Mount Gambier Mayor Andrew
Lee raising concerns over the slow progress of the redevelopment.

GLG’s blueprint announced 12 months ago mooted a sprawling shopping complex with ALDI and Target as its main anchors.

The proposal also included 30 specialty shops.

See The Border Watch tomorrow for a full wrap up of the multi-million-dollar proposal.
