SUPERHERO mums, family and friends dressed in every shade of pink will forgo a Mother’s Day sleep-in on Sunday to take part in the annual Mother’s Day Classic.

Hundreds of locals are expected to “walk all over breast cancer” at the Valley Lake, joining thousands of registered participants at events nationwide.

Funds raised are donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation to support research and improve outcomes for people diagnosed with breast cancer.

Mount Gambier Mother’s Day Classic committee member Peter Collins said this year’s fun run was one of 87 events across Australia.

“Nationally the Mother’s Day Classic has been running for 21 years and has raised $33.2m for breast cancer research,” Mr Collins said.

“Locally we always have a fantastic turnout with plenty of families celebrating Mother’s Day with a walk or run around the course together.”

One in eight Australian women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime and on average eight women die from breast cancer every day in Australia.

Since the inaugural Mother’s Day Classic fundraiser, five-year survival rates for women diagnosed with breast cancer have increased to 90pc.

Organising committee member Simon Brook said participants have the option to walk or run two, four, six or eight kilometres.

“The event begins at 10am and coffee and breakfast will be available at the Valley Lake before, during and after the run,” Mr Brook said.

“We encourage everyone to have a go – you can be a serious runner or just out for a casual stroll.”

“Your registration fee is donated to the cause and you can sign up to raise extra funds via your own fundraising page.”
