CHILDREN and adolescents from across the South East have united through diversity in celebration of this year’s Youth Week.

A jam-packed schedule of activities and events was on offer across the Wattle Range Council area and open to 12 to 25 year olds.

Based around the theme “Your Future, Your Way” the week has coincided with the April school holidays, encouraging local youth to get outdoors and participate in a number of hands-on and interactive activities.

“We are really pleased with the broad range of activities and events that have been developed, but more importantly the support we are getting from across the Wattle Range community,” Wattle Range Council development services director Steve Chapple said.

More than 20 individual activities and events were held during Youth Week and hosted by a number of local identities including cooking demonstrations with former Masterchef contestant Melissa Armfield (Shearer’s Cook Cafe) and Kirby Shearing (Soul Project), scooter and skating demonstrations, movie nights, geocaching workshops, fishing and surf clinics and an open day at Noorla-Yo-Long.

Activities have been well attended, with around 50 participants in the Helping Young People Achieve event at the Millicent Public Library on Tuesday.

The creative outdoor activity incorporated adventure therapy in a fun and active way with participants using their teamwork and problem solving in pick-up sticks, puzzle work and building.

Another 20 youth attended the cooking demonstration – also held on Tuesday – hosted by Ms Armfield at Millicent High School.

Ms Armfield guided participants through a step-by-step cooking class where they made their own pizza and apple crumble.

“All the events and activities held throughout the week were free, and were scheduled across various locations in Wattle Range Council including Beachport, Penola, and Millicent, with a lot of the events and activities not normally available in the district,” Mr Chapple said.

Youth Week wraps up this Sunday and this year’s celebration is said to be the biggest hosted in the Wattle Range region.
