Picking for a cause

PICKING FOR A CAUSE: Raidis Estate owner Steve Raidis, Penley Estate cellar door manager Sara Fletcher, Hollick Estates winemaker Trent Nankivell, Partick of Coonawarra winemaker and owner Luke Tocaciu and Patrick of Coonawarra brand manager Natasha Gordon encouraging the community to participate in the Homeless Grape Project this weekend.

A COMMUNITY project of a different kind will give locals a chance to help those in need this weekend.

A selection of Coonawarra’s wineries have joined together to assist the Homeless Grapes Project with winemakers, wine enthusiasts, growers, producers, families and individuals all encouraged to get invovled.

Vinomofo is encouraging people to donate their time and resources to create a fantastic local wine, made by the people, for the people.

All proceeds will go to ac.care, which serves the Limestone Coast, Murraylands and Riverland communities to help transform the lives of those experiencing homelessness.

The past two South Australian vintages have enabled more than $70,000 to be donated to charity and Vinomofo’s chief executive officer and co-founder Andre Eikmeier expects this year’s cabernet sauvignon to generate a huge amount of interest and funding for ac.care.

The Coonawarra picking will be an epic crawl, which will see volunteers wander among three local wineries.

The wine party will kick off at Raidis Estate, before heading to Patrick of Coonawarra and will finish with a traditional grape stomp at Hollick Estates.

The Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon will also include donated grapes from Penley Estate, Redman Wine and Sam Brand, creating a unique representation of the very best Coonawarra has to offer.

“The Coonawarra picking is going to be unlike anything we’ve done before for The Homeless Grapes Project,” Mr Eikmeier said.

The three different wineries will provide volunteers with a great chance to explore the Coonawarra region and see some of the best when it comes to wineries.

Mr Eikmeier said each year the company was humbled by the response to the project as people from all walks of life donate their time to create something really amazing to help those in need.

“We can’t wait to get back to South Australia for another round of pickings,” Mr Eikmeier said.

“We’re hoping to have more than 100 people picking on the day – so bring your friends, family, children and join in.”

The community based grape picking will be held on Saturday from 9am at Raidis Estate.

There will be coffee available to kick-start the morning with a sausage sizzle provided after the grape stomping at Hollick.
