THREE local people were taken to hospital by ambulance after two vehicles collided on the Southern Ports Highway near Rendelsham on Tuesday morning.
Millicent Police Sergeant Rick Errington said a south-bound four-wheel drive pulled off the highway around 8am.
The vehicle then attempted a U-turn but crashed with a station wagon with three occupants which was also travelling southwards.
“The male driver and his teenage female passenger were taken by ambulance to Millicent and District Hospital while a female in the station wagon was transported to Mount Gambier Hospital for observation,” Sgt Errington said.
“None of the injuries were serious and all of the occupants in the two vehicles are residents of the Millicent district.
“The total damage bill to the two vehicles is expected to exceed $25,000.
“The airbags on the station wagon were deployed and I expect this vehicle will be considered a write-off.
“Police investigations into the collision are continuing and charges may be considered.”
Sgt Errington said it was a fortunate coincidence that two local doctors and two local nurses were passing by at the time of the crash and were able to stop and offer assistance.
Vehicular traffic on the highway near Mullins Swamp was restricted for a short period.
The collision scene was also attended by Country Fire Service crews from Millicent, Southend and Rendelsham, the Millicent State Emergency Service Unit and multiple SA Ambulance Service crews including the Beachport First Responders.
A Millicent contractor transported both vehicles from the scene and the highway reopened at about 9.35am.
