HUNDREDS of community-minded locals will hit the track at Blue Lake Sports Park this weekend for the Limestone Coast Relay for Life to support Cancer Council SA.
Locally the overnight event has raised more than $750,000 for Cancer Council SA, funding vital support services, research projects, advocacy initiatives and prevention programs.
An opportunity to recognise and celebrate those who have overcome cancer or are undergoing treatment, relay participants take on the challenge of keeping their team’s baton – and symbol of hope – moving around the track for 19 hours.
Boasting a number of activities to keep teams motivated, funds raised will support Greenhill Lodge in Adelaide, which provides accommodation for country patients.
Up to seven or eight families from the Limestone Coast stay at the lodge at any one time for an average of 1000 nights per year.
This year’s opening ceremony will be held at 1.45pm on Saturday, with the survivors and carers walk and first lap at 2pm.
Cancer Council SA relationship officer Aaron Tannahill said for locals who had not yet registered, there were still opportunities to become involved.
“We’re really looking forward to bringing Relay For Life to the Limestone Coast this weekend and are incredibly thankful to everyone in the local community who has made the commitment to relay in 2018 and support Cancer Council SA,” Mr Tannahill said.
“Relay For Life is a great community event for all ages and gives friends, family, co-workers and neighbours the chance to join together and show their support for loved ones facing cancer and also take the time to remember those who lost their lives to the disease.
“If you haven’t registered to relay you can still get involved on the day, with on-site registrations open from Saturday at 11am.
“People can come down at any time throughout the weekend to cheer on our relayers, with live music and activities on Saturday afternoon to keep guests and onlookers entertained.”
To show support for local participants, donate online at www.relayforlife.org.au and search for Limestone Coast.
“Every dollar raised through the event goes towards Cancer Council SA’s life saving prevention, support, research and advocacy programs and makes a real difference to the lives of those South Australians diagnosed with cancer each and every day,” Mr Tannahill said.
