THE South Australia Youth Week in Wattle Range aims to showcase the diversity of activities available in the region.

Feedback received from young people, directly and through the Wattle Range Council’s last youth survey, revealed a broad range of interests, shaping an exciting program of events.

This year’s theme Your Future, Your Way will highlight young people’s roles in shaping their lives, and helping to shape the direction for the state.

Held during the first week of the April school holidays – from April 13 to 22 – the youth week will include a wide range of practical, interesting and fun activities across the region, catering to most youth aged between 12 and 25 years.

Fishing, skate demonstrations, cooking classes, design and technology, movies, an escape room and a surf lifesaving event have all been scheduled, along with more practical sessions on how to develop and write an effective resume, learning how to budget and relaxation techniques.

Also included in the program is the presentation of the third annual youth recognition awards in Millicent.

“The presentation evening will be one of the highlights of the week and will be held at the Millicent Community Club in conjunction with the Millicent Lions Club,” council’s chief executive officer Ben Gower said.

“The awards continue to be generously supported by Glen Carron Transport, the Medical Clinic Millicent, Kimberly-Clark Australia and council.

“We will also be working together with a number of other organisations, including headspace, Noorla Yo-Long, Career Development Centre, Helping Young People Achieve, Beachport Surf Life Saving Club, Lions and more, to successfully deliver the range of events and activities over the week.

“The youth of our region are of great value to our community and 2018’s youth week will be about empowering them to become the best version of themselves.”

Council was successful in an application to the SA Government’s Office for Youth, Department for Communities and Social Inclusion for funding assistance to conduct its SA Youth Week activities.

The council was awarded the maximum allowable grant of $3000, but also commits financially and with significant staff time.

Youth interested in participating in any of the youth week activities are encouraged to check out the program of events at www.wattlerange.sa.gov.au/youthweek or like the page on Facebook.
