Safe city place to connect

SUPPORT: Headspace Mount Gambier allied health worker Imogen Millais runs a LGBTIQ group every second Tuesday at the local facility.

HEADSPACE Mount Gambier continues to provide members of the LGBTIQ community with a safe and supportive environment through the creation of a free social group.

According to a recent self-reported survey at the local centre, 22pc of young people who attended the facility between October and December last year identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex or questioning.

A further 2.9pc identify as “other” when selecting gender, meaning they are gender diverse, indeterminate or intersex.

Meeting fortnightly at the local facility, members have the opportunity to mingle with others, gain friendships and be themselves without the fear of being judged.

Created in 2016, allied health worker Imogen Millais said the group has been a great success, attracting many young people and helping them to be happy with who they are.

“Being part of the LGBTIQ community can be quite lonely, especially when you are coming out and trying to find out who you are, so to have a space where young people can socialise together in a safe place is really beneficial,” she said.

“It has been a really positive experience for members and while over time the numbers do fluctuate, we do have regular members.

“I have seen friendships grow and many are connecting outside of the group as well, which is really good.”

Participating in movie nights, playing board games and cooking are just some of the activities run through the group every second Tuesday.

“I really encourage those who are a part of the LGBTIQ community or even those who are unsure to come along and see what it is all about, it is a safe and supportive place,” Ms Millais said.

“Anyone who is aged between 12 and 25 is invited and there is no cost.”
