A SUSPICIOUS fire at a Mount Gambier home is currently being investigated by police after firefighters were called to extinguish the blaze yesterday morning.
Police and Mount Gambier Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) retained firefighters were called to the property on Waterhouse Street at around 10.40pm after reports of a house on fire.
A passerby made the call to 000, which allowed emergency services to extinguish the blaze in around 10 minutes.
MFS retained station officer Rob Baker said two fire trucks attended the scene with around nine firefighters who used breathing apparatus during their battle with the blaze that started at the rear of the house.
“Police and MFS are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire,” Mr Baker said.
A South Australian Police spokesperson revealed they believed the fire had been deliberately lit and are looking for any witnesses who have information to come forward.
“Fire crews were quick to extinguish the blaze, but it caused a large amount of damage to the house,” the spokesperson said.
“There was no one home at the time of the fire and there were no reported injuries.
“Crime Scene Investigators attended the scene to examine the circumstances surrounding the fire and believe it may have been deliberately lit.”
The fire is believed to have caused around $40,000 damage to the property.
