Young people face their fears

HOLIDAY FUN: Headspace Youth Reference Group volunteer Lexi McLellan takes part in the Face Your Fears school holidays activity with youth workers Ash Spillman and Kym Galluccio.

WITH a blindfold covering their eyes and a range of questionable tasting foods lined up, young people from across the region last week put their courage to the test during the Headspace Face Your Fears school holiday activity.

Challenging their thought process in the cognitive behaviour therapy workshop, the group of 12 to 17-year-olds learnt sometimes things are not as bad as you expect.

“It is good to introduce those concepts you might have in a counselling session, but in a more fun way that young people can engage with,” community liaison worker Mikarla Papini said.

“This activity really focused on challenging yourself and comparing your expectations to reality.”

Running a selection of activities during the school holidays at the newly developed site, Ms Papini said it was a great way for young people to meet others in the community.

“Each year the school holiday activities get bigger and more popular with many people, not just Headspace clients taking part,” she said.

“We try to cater for a range of interests with games, outdoor activities, crafts and cooking.

“All sessions are run by qualified clinicians so there is a therapeutic element as well.”

Call Headspace on 8725 0443 for more information on upcoming school holiday activities.
