Young Carers success story

SUPPORT: Kip McGrath tutor Leon Rigopoulos, Mount Gambier resident Elizabeth Durbidge and Carers SA Respite program Limestone Coast assessment and liaison worker Maria Shipton.

THE support of Carers SA Limestone Coast has helped a high school student achieve her academic dreams.

Mount Gambier resident Elizabeth Durbidge and her mother first made contact with Carers SA Limestone Coast in 2014 through the Young Carers Carer Support program.

While completing Year 10 at the time, Ms Durbidge was also providing support to her younger sibling with disabilities.

As her caring role impacted on her schoolwork, Ms Durbidge was having trouble keeping up with some of her subjects.

Through the Carers SA Limestone Coast Young Carer Respite program, funded short-term tutoring support was provided for Ms Durbidge via Kip McGrath, facilitated by tutor Leon Rigopoulos.

Ms Durbidge found the tutoring was beneficial and allowed her to catch up in more difficult subjects.

The student’s confidence also grew and she would often visit the office to meet with the respite worker to talk about how she was thriving and to request further tutoring support.

This set Ms Durbidge up for her senior high school years, with her aim after completing school to be accepted into Foundation Studies at University, which she then went on to achieve.

The Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre Young Carers respite program assists carers up to and including the age of 18 who need support to complete their secondary education due to the demands of their caring role.

Educational support includes support services such as tutoring in school subjects or the development of study skills.
