GRANT High School students’ dream careers became a step closer to reality yesterday morning as ATAR scores were released across the state.
Exceeding well above the state average, the top four students of the Mount Gambier-based school placed all in the 90s with Tayla Wilkinson receiving the highest score of 97.60.
Following closely behind, Annie Rombouts received a score of 96.9, with Jeremy Merrett and Lauren Pike achieving 95.8 and 95.4 respectively.
Studying English, mathematics, chemistry and biology this year, Ms Wilkinson said she was relieved when she saw her score yesterday morning.
“I thought I would maybe get in the low 90s, but to get almost 97 was amazing,” she said.
Planning on taking a gap year next year in the army, Ms Wilkinson said she plans on studying aerospace engineering in 2019.
“I really like physics and that career is kind of along those lines so I think I would really enjoy it,” she said.
Also pleased he is able to relax after receiving his ATAR score, Mr Merrett said it had been a difficult but rewarding year.
“I tried not to overload myself, but you really cannot stress how hard it is to people,” he said.
“In the end you just have to trust that you will do well and get
what you deserve.”
Shocked to see his score yesterday morning, Mr Merrett said it was an emotional morning for his family.
“It was crazy, I clicked to see my score and I think I just sat there in shock for a few seconds,” he said.
“I am glad I did well and am looking forward to going straight into university next year and studying a Bachelor of Medical Sciences in either Adelaide or Melbourne.”
Proud of all of the students’ achievements this year, principal Fleur Roachock said she could not be more pleased with how they have performed.
“We are so excited about this year’s Year 12s, the number of As is outstanding and the crop of young people who have gone through have been delightful to work with,” she said.
