GLENBURNIE Primary School students showcased their creative abilities at the First Lego League (FLL) Australian National Championships recently.

After placing first in the Mount Gambier event, the group of Year 6 and 7 students was selected as one of only three teams to represent the state at Macquarie University in Sydney.

Up against 67 other teams from across Australia, from both primary and secondary schools, the local team finished in 30th position.

Principal Sam Griffith was thrilled with how the students went and said the opportunity to compete on a national scale was a wonderful experience for the students and teachers.

“It was great to talk to other teams that had been involved in FLL for many years and they were more than happy to share what they had learnt along the way,” he said.

Over the course of the two day competition, the team presented a research project, focusing on how to better look after local water supplies, including the Blue Lake.

They also presented and explained their robot design and the coding they had used to program it, took part in an “on the spot” challenge where they had to demonstrate and talk about the Lego League core values and competed in three robot games challenges.

“It was a great experience and very eye opening for our students,” Mr Griffith said.

“The students are looking forward to sharing what they have learnt from their experiences with other local schools and teams early next year when the 2018 First Lego League begins.

“A big thank you goes to our local Blue Lake Education Partnership which helped fund the trip.”
