FIREFIGHTERS spent several hours at Carter Holt Harvey on Commercial Street West on Wednesday after a fire started in the mill complex at the premises.
Three Mount Gambier Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) appliances carrying 10 firefighters responded to reports of a fire at the complex at around 2.25pm.
They were supported by Compton Country Fire Service and on arrival crews found a large two storey mill complex with smoke showing.
A MFS spokesperson said sprinklers had activated inside the premises and all occupants self-evacuated.
“The sprinklers assisted firefighters to extinguish the fire, which was at the roof level above the production press area,” she said.
“It took crews approximately 30 minutes to extinguish the fire, however crews stayed on scene for some time checking for any hot spots.”
Mount Gambier MFS acting station officer Matt Williamson said four fire fighters used breathing apparatus and two high pressure hose lines to extinguish the blaze.
“It ended up being pretty minimal damage to the equipment,” Mr Williamson said.
Mount Gambier MFS required the use of its Combination Aerial Pumping Appliance (CAPA) to externally extinguish spot fires on the roof.
“Two of our crew used it as a water tower to extinguish some small fires on the roof,” Mr Williamson said.
Police and paramedics also attended the scene, however there were no reported injuries.
“Paramedics were there to just monitor the health of the firefighters as it was quite a hot day and we were working in a hot environment,” Mr Williamson said.
The cause of the fire had not been determined at press time.
