A LAUNDROMAT owner has praised the efforts of her staff and the emergency services to contain a small fire in a dryer on Saturday night, allowing the business to resume operations later that evening.
Mount Gambier Laundry and Cafe owner Kerry Guerin said the fire, which broke out in a dryer after tea towels covered in cooking oil spontaneously combusted in the machine, was quickly contained, causing minimal damage to the premises.
Mount Gambier Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) firefighters responded swiftly to the premises on Commercial Street East at around 6.15pm after receiving several 000 calls.
“Thanks to the quality of the dryer and the quick response from emergency services, the damage was contained to the one machine,” Ms Guerin said.
“I have to thank the MFS and police for attending the fire so quickly and also our staff who have worked hard behind the scenes.”
Ms Guerin said the laundromat was well prepared for the unforeseen incident.
“We have been well supported by highly experienced tradesmen who have set our laundry up to be at a really high standard,” she said.
“As a result in the event of an emergency like this one, we were able to limit the damage.”
Praising her loyal customer base for their continued support, Ms Guerin said there are now plans in place for the laundromat to move to a bigger premises in 2018.
“We are now expanding the laundry by moving to a bigger premises on Crouch Street South in February 2018,” she said.
“We will close the doors at this site in February.”
