IN THE FAMILY: A family of visiting Irish Wolfhounds loved their time in Mount Gambier with owners Peter Wright (left), Chris and Jodie Michelmore and Joan Wright for the dog contest associated with the Mount Gambier A&H Society Spring Show.

DOGS big, small, fluffy and short-haired all gathered at the Mount Gambier Showgrounds this weekend, strutting their stuff and showing off their talent as part of the Mount Gambier A&H Society’s Championship All Breed Dog Show.

Travelling from across the country, the dogs of 200 different breeds were put to the test, with their ears, bodies and walk all judged by professionals.

Showing her Welsh Springer Spanials on Saturday morning, Adelaide Hills resident Miriam Ahrens said the Mount Gambier event was one of her favourites to take part in.

“We unfortunately didn’t receive a placing this year, it was just one of those days, but it was still a lot of fun,” she told The Border Watch on the day.

“My son and I always come down for the event, it is much more relaxed than the bigger royal shows and everyone is a lot happier.”

With experienced and newcomers all taking part, dogs of all breeds and their owners had a chance to mingle and chat about their love for showing.

Portland resident Cherree Benter and her not so common breed of dog, a Borzoi, definitely stood out among the crowd as they waited to step in front of the judges.

However, showing is classed as the second job for the gentle giants who are regulars at nursing homes in the Victorian town.

“We love taking part in the shows, particularly Mount Gambier as it is only an a hour drive, but Archie and my other Borzois are also therapy dogs,” Ms Benter said.

“They are such lovely dogs and really love being around people.”

The event – which was held in conjunction with the Mount Gambier A&H Society Spring Show – was held over the course of three days with toys, terriers, gundogs, hounds, working dogs, sporting dogs and utility dogs judged in separate groups.
