FORMER Rendelsham resident Lyndal Redman recently raised $9500 by shaving her head for the Cancer Council.
She lost her locks in front of a 400-strong crowd at the Many Faces of Cancer Gala Dinner held at Adelaide Oval.
Prior to the event Ms Redman received many donations from the South East, including one from the Beachport Golf Club.
Donors were also inspired by an article in The South Eastern Times which outlined her bid to raise funds to support cancer treatment and research.
With her mother Liz, father Kym and sister Kahlee in the audience, Ms Redman stood on stage to tell her story and explain the reason behind her head shave.
With the completion of the shave, Ms Redman said she was almost speechless after the room gave her a standing ovation.
“What I didn’t expect was the reaction from the room and all the people here, so many came up to me afterwards to give me a hug and say thank-you.” Ms Redman said.
“The stories I was told that night still brings tears to my eyes, especially meeting a gentleman who is currently battling multiple brain tumours.
“All I did was put my hair up for auction, it’ll grow back, but the love and support that night will be with me forever.
“I’m just lucky I was able to do this for those who need it the most.
“I’d like to thank all those wonderful individuals in the South East community who donated to my head shave, as well as the Beachport Golf Club whose kind donation got me to the huge amount.”
The Many Faces of Cancer Gala Dinner raised more than $55,000 which will go direct to the Cancer Council Lodges and buses so that rural and regional cancer patients and their carers have a home when they are in Adelaide for treatments and doctors’ appointments.
