THE Mount Gambier Wood Turning Club Yarn Bowl Competition was held last month to recognise entrants’ skills with the annual Don Golding Perpetual Trophy.

It was the fourth year the competition was held in the Mount Gambier Woodturning Club rooms, with the awards divided into four sections – junior, intermediate, senior and open.

The winner of the junior section was Mitchell Watt, with Robert Bawden taking the intermediate prize and the senior section accolade going to Cyril Schwarz.

The open section was judged on innovation, display and workmanship and was created last year to allow the wood turner who met the challenge to take their ability and talent to a higher level.

“The award recognises the recipients’ belief in themselves and earnt the praise of several experienced wood turners and the judge due to it being of exceptionally high standard,” award master of ceremonies Alma Golding said.

This award went to talented wood turner John Ferguson.

“Don would be delighted and proud of the progress and standard achieved by the contestants here today, ” Ms Golding said.

She said Mr Golding’s time at the club was delightful and he had a dream that others would experience the same joy he did and in particular at a younger age.

“He hoped others would experience the art much earlier than he had so they could have many years ahead of them to experience the fulfillment in creating beautiful items of value,” she said.
