EXPLORE THE LIBRARY: Library assistant Brendan Bachmann takes the interactive audio tour for a test drive ahead of this Saturday’s Innovation Lab. A virtual tour guide will walk visitors around the library and stop to point out interesting facts, including the architectural significance of the library’s limestone wall.

THE Mount Gambier Library will host its second Innovation Lab on Saturday with a focus on new and emerging technology.

Between 10am and 1pm the community will be able to explore, see, share, touch and play with cool technologies including virtual reality headsets, drones, a magic history phone and 3D printing.

Library assistant Brendan Bachmann said the magic history phone merged old and new technology to deliver a unique learning experience.

“We have used an old telephone with a rotary dial,” he said.

“People will be able to pick up the phone and a voice on the line will prompt them to dial a certain number to hear different stories about local history.”

An interactive audio tour will allow visitors an opportunity to learn about the history of the library itself.

“The audio tour uses silent disco headphones,” Mr Bachmann said.

“A virtual tour guide will walk people around the library and stop at certain places to point out interesting facts.”

The Innovation Lab is an opportunity for visitors to be inspired, gain confidence and a better understanding of today’s technology.

Attendees will be shown how to access a wide range of eResources; eMagazines, eBooks and eAudio books and an NBN seniors question and answer info hub will be available.

The event follows Mount Gambier City Council’s free Business Tech Show at the Main Corner Complex tomorrow.

The business networking event will showcase developing technologies, including virtual reality, drones and video conferencing and will highlight the importance of connectivity and the impacts and opportunities that existing and developing technologies can offer local businesses.

Business Tech Show – Into the Future will be held on the Kings Floor from 3pm to 6pm tomorrow.
