PRODUCTION of powdered milk has started at the state-of-the-art Union Dairy Company milk plant, launching new competition in the region’s milk market.

Production has exceeded expectations, beginning with processing of 100,000 litres of milk per day to now producing an impressive 500,000 litres with hopes to progress to one million litres.

Union Dairy Company managing director Daniel Aarons said the commissioning of milk has gone exceedingly well with production on track for domestic use and international export.

The plant produces bulk fresh cream milk incorporating 40pc cream, which will be utilised in the domestic market.

“In addition we will be producing Anhydrous Milk Fat (AMF), skim milk powder and whole milk powder which will be exported,” Mr Aarons said.

Regarding rising energy prices, Mr Aarons said he was concerned due to the size of the plant, however the company was dedicated to working with various organisations to reduce costs.
