SERVING a variety of mouth-watering pastries and cakes, Mount Gambier’s Sugar ‘n Spice and All Things Nice has proved it’s the place to beat after winning a number of awards at Australia’s Best Pie and Pastie Competition recently.
Taking over ownership of the Commercial Street East business three and half years ago, Victor and Tania Wearne have grown the business in leaps and bounds, now serving a range of pastries and sweet treats that would tempt any bakery lover.
“We have a baking background and when we saw the business we thought it was in an ideal spot within a busy little area,” Mr Wearne said.
“While there are a number of other bakeries in Mount Gambier there are none that are really close so we had potential to grow the business to include pastries as well.”
Continually improving the products on offer, the couple has entered a range of competitions over the years, receiving many awards for pies, pasties and cakes.
However, this year’s success at Australia’s Best Pie and Pastie Competition in Melbourne has left them feeling even more proud of their ever growing business, receiving an award for every single pie entered.
“This is the best we have done in a competition – it’s great to see all of our products rated equally,” Mr Wearne said.
“We always hope to get a couple of medals but it was a surprise to get one for everything that we put forward.”
Up against over 1700 entries from across Australia, Sugar ‘n Spice and All Things Nice was awarded a total of 20 medals – 15 silver and five bronze.
“We will keep going until we win a gold medal – that is our main goal – we just have to keep improving little aspects in our products,” Mr Wearne said.
“Our pepper pie was only two points away from winning gold so we aren’t far off.
“We look forward to seeing more people in the community come here and eat some of the best pastries in Australia.”
