MOUNT Gambier City Council outdoor caretakers have ‘planted the town green’ this month as they increase the city’s street tree population by around 300 trees.
City Council allocates approximately $40,000 each year to purchase and plant street trees as part of council’s long term plan to provide a greener environment.
Trees have been planted along Conroe Drive, Longmire Terrace, Maxwell Street and Somerset Close.
Outdoor caretaker Rick Karsten said he and his team settled into a rhythm after planting the first few trees.
“We have the process down pat and often have a chat to people over the back fence as we plant the trees, which is nice,” Mr Karsten said.
“We plant hundreds of trees around this time every year to make the city’s streets greener.
“Our arms are pretty tired by the end of the program.”
The street tree program will be completed within the next two weeks.
