Students celebrate peace

FINDING PEACE: McDonald Park Primary School students Skye and Joe make a wish for peace as they hold the Peace Torch.

MCDONALD Park Primary School students shared a peaceful moment on Thursday as they took part in the annual Peace Run.

Founded by Sri Chinmoy, the run is a chance for people across the globe to spread the message of international friendship, cultural understanding and a shared hope for a peaceful world.

Each year, thousands of runners carry the Peace Torch around the globe, covering 100 nations on six continents.

In May this year, a group of runners in Australia set off from Brisbane on a 3500km journey to Adelaide.

Visiting schools, community groups and civic leaders, the runners gave everyone a chance to contribute to a wave of goodwill.

Principal Kirsty Trahar was thankful the group included McDonald Park Primary as one of its many stops along the way.

“It was lovely to host them and they gave students a better understanding of how we should all care for one another,” she said.

“I think peace is a concept that all students need to be aware of.”

Runners shared the message through singing songs, playing games and spending a moment in silence.

Anubha Baird said it was the group’s mission to involve as many people as possible in the run, including school children.

“You can see how much they enjoy being able to take a moment of peace,” the runner said.

“It is a great opportunity for them to have that time to be more peaceful and feel more connected with the rest of the world.”

In the lead-up to the Peace Run visit, a number of younger students learnt about peace through making posters and writing poems which were read on the day.

The Peace Run group travelled onto Millicent, Beachport and Kingston before arriving in Adelaide on Saturday.
