Business kept in dark

BLACKOUT: Pick Avenue Deli and Bakery employee Kimberly Murrell had a difficult start to the day as the business was thrust into darkness with a power outage.

BUSINESSES and homes across Mount Gambier had a dark start to the day yesterday with yet another power outage.

Over 1600 customers struggled through the morning, using candles and torches to open their businesses and prepare themselves for the day ahead.

SA Power Networks spokesperson Paul Roberts said the outage was caused by a damaged insulator that was quickly replaced once authorities were notified.

“The outage occurred just after 7am with power coming back on at 8.30am,” he said.

Pick Avenue Deli and Bakery employee Kimberly Murrell said it was a big inconvenience for the popular business.

“I was half way through making a coffee when the power went out,” she said.

“The bakers had to use torches to see what they were doing and had to roll the pastry out by hand instead of using machines.

“It put us a bit behind for the day, we do a delivery run every morning and had to put that on hold because everything had not been finished.”

A few streets away on Commercial Street East, A Slice of Metro staff also spent the morning in darkness as they waited to start their morning duties.

“Everyone was grumpy this morning with the power out,” employee Joanne Wilde told the Border Watch yesterday.

“That is the busiest time of the day for us so we lost a lot of money during that time.

“However, we are thankful that it ended up coming back on earlier than expected and we were able to get on with the rest of the day.”
