Event to ‘walk over’ breast cancer

THINK PINK: Mother’s Day Classic committee member Caroline Jacobs with daughters Lily and Isla Brook and major sponsor The Athlete’s Foot owner Paull Smith.

AN army of Mount Gambier residents wearing bright pink capes and tutus will participate in the Mother’s Day Classic on Sunday to “walk all over” breast cancer.

The national event will celebrate 20 years this weekend, with the first regional Mother’s Day Classic held in 2007.

Event coordinator Julie Denton said the annual fun run raised vital funds for breast cancer research.

“Locally this is our 9th Mother’s Day Classic and we would like to really put our region on the map by seeing a record crowd come along and join us on Sunday,” Ms Denton said.

“Our aim is to deliver a fun, healthy and inspirational event that brings the community together on Mother’s Day to support and remember those touched by breast cancer.

“With one in 8 women and around one in 700 men developing breast cancer in their lifetime, our event provides vital funding for research here in Australia towards preventing and curing this disease.”

The family friendly event is an opportunity for locals of all ages to dress up in shades of pink and participate in a non-competitive, fun walk or run.

“The event begins at the Valley Lake at 10am, which means it is perfectly placed between bringing Mum breakfast in bed and then taking her out for lunch,” Ms Denton said.

Participants have the option to walk or run two, four, six or eight kilometres.

“Some people come and walk with their mum as a way of celebrating Mother’s day together, others walk because they don’t have their Mum with them – perhaps she is far away or has passed on – and they want to do something to honour her,” Ms Denton said.

“Most of us have been affected by breast cancer in some way and participating in the Mother’s Day Classic is a way that we can do something significant and positive for others.

“It has really put extra meaning into the celebration of Mother’s day for many local families each year.”

Live music and entertainment, coffee and breakfast will be available at the Valley Lake before, during and after the event.

“We encourage everyone to have a go – you can be a serious runner or just out for a casual stroll,” Ms Denton said.

“Prams, kids, dads and grandparents are all welcome – each year we have some fabulous prizes from generous local businesses.

“100 percent of your registration fee is donated to the cause and you can sign up to raise extra funds via your own fundraising page.
