STAFF PROFILE: Melanie Abbott – trainee administration assistant and distribution officer

THE Border Watch’s friendly face at the front desk, Melanie Abbott, is one of the newsgroup’s newest employees but is already making her mark.

Rising through the ranks in the retail world, Melanie decided she wanted a change and when an administration position at The Border Watch Newsgroup came up, she knew she had to take a chance.

“I’ve always wanted to work in an administration role but hadn’t found the perfect fit yet,” she said.

“When I saw the job here advertised I knew it would be right for me.

“The Border Watch is a huge part of our community and I think it is pretty special for me to contribute to that.”

As a trainee administration assistant and distribution officer, Melanie carries out reception duties and manages the distribution of the newsgroup’s printed and digital editions to newsagents, retailers, subscribers and the public.

Now settling into her role, she is studying Certificate 3 in administration which is something she is excited to finish.

“It is a really great opportunity to study while working,” she said.

“I’m very grateful to be able to do it and I think I’m just lucky to be working in such a supportive environment.

“Everyone has been more than happy to help me with any questions and I’ve made great friends here already.”

Hailing from Millicent, Melanie moved to the Blue Lake city around six years ago as a teenager and never looked back.

Purchasing her first home at just 19 years of age, she is more independent than your average 21 year old.

In her spare time Melanie enjoys teaching highland dance and has been practicing the art on and off for around since she was 7 years old.

“I really love highland dancing but I took some time off in my teenage years to make sure it was really for me,” she said.

“After less than a year back on the dance floor, I received my teaching qualification which is something that really gives me joy.

“Helping young people find a passion for highland dance and just dancing in general is really rewarding for me.”

Melanie is also an avid cake decorator and enjoys baking desserts and yummy treats for her friends and family.

One of the most important people in her life is her partner Daniel, the pair live together and are proud parents to border collie cross kelpie Clio.

Melanie is also thankful for her parents’ support over the years and believes she would not be where she is without them.

“My partner and my parents play a huge part in my life,” she said.

“Without any of them by my side thing would be a lot harder.

“I am so grateful for everything they do for me.”
