JOINING The Border Watch almost four years ago, apprentice printer Mitch Radford has been an integral part of the newspaper production team.
He began his career at the newsgroup in a casual role, manually inserting catalogues into each edition.
After around a year he was offered a position as an apprentice printer and took up the opportunity straight away.
“I was pretty grateful when they offered me the position,” Mitch said.
“When I first started here I didn’t know much about the industry but after being in the inserting room for a year my interest was definitely piqued.
“I wanted to learn as much as I could about the industry and further my career and an apprenticeship gave me that.”
In his role as a printer, Mitch works with our printing press, maintaining the machinery and ensuring each paper is printed to satisfaction.
In his time at the newsgroup, Mitch has grown to appreciate the importance of team work across all departments.
“We all work together to get the pages done each day,” he said.
“Nothing would work if even one department wasn’t here, so it’s all about building a good relationship with your coworkers to produce the best editions each week.”
As part of his apprenticeship, Mitch has spent time in Adelaide learning his trade.
“I think I’ve learnt a lot going away to trade school,” he said.
“It has really helped when I’m back at work to know exactly how everything goes together.
“The opportunity to complete an apprenticeship has really expanded my knowledge of not just printing but media as well.”
Originally from Western Australia, Mitch moved to the South East over five years ago with his partner and two children.
During his time away from the office, he enjoys going fishing at the river and spending time with his loved ones.
“My favourite thing about living here in the Limestone Coast is the country lifestyle,” he said.
“It’s nice to get away from the hustle and bustle and just enjoy the outdoors.
“Since living here I have realised what a great community I am part of – it’s just an enjoyable place to live and a great area for my children to grow up.”
Mitch has only a few months until he receives his qualification and is looking forward to his future in the industry.
“I’m excited for what the future holds and how my career will progress at The Border Watch.”
