World of opportunities within teenager’s reach

UP AND COMING CHEF: Solomon Islands migrant Amy Grouse now has the world at her fingertips moving to Australia four years ago. Ms Grouse has aspirations of one day owning her own cafe and becoming a chef.

COOKING up a storm can now become a full-time occupation for Mount Gambier resident Amy Grouse after migrating to Australia four years ago.

At age 13, Ms Grouse followed in her mother’s footsteps, settling in Mount Gambier after growing up in the Solomon Islands.

Ms Grouse said although the move was hard, she now has a world of opportunities in her new home.

“When I left home I was really upset as I was leaving family and friends behind,” she said.

“If I was back home, I do not think I would have the same opportunities as what I have now.

“My dad wanted us to have a better education and outcome in life and thought Australia was the place to start.”

With musical talent running through her bones, Ms Grouse also shares a passion for singing.

“I am a Christian and learnt to sing through my church at home surrounded by family and friends,” she said.

“When I sing I just feel like I am back in the Solomon Islands, enjoying time with them.

“I love singing because it brings people together and gives me a voice.”

Ms Grouse said most of her songs contain an element of God.

“When I settled in Mount Gambier I met my friend Chanceline Kakule who is also a Christian,” she said.

“It is great that I have brought my singing to Australia as it brings me a sense of belonging.

“I go to church every weekend and am happy I have found singing again.”

Ms Grouse said her dream was to become a chef and own a cafe.

“I am one step closer as I work at a vibrant cafe now which has given me an insight into the hospitality industry,” she said.

“I love my job and I am excited for what will come next.”
