TUNING IN: Going by the name Corduroy Spaceship, South East musician Torsten Gustavsson released his unique tune About Everything last week. His EP Corduroy Spaceship & The Custard Gumboot will debut on April 19 which will be available on all online streaming platforms.

DRAWING inspiration from intergalactic shirts and rubbery custard, South East musician Torsten Gustavsson’s soon to be released record is the perfect blend of psychedelic and pop tunes.

Going by the name Corduroy Spaceship, Mr Gustavsson said the album was pieced together in the

four walls of his Mount Gambier bedroom.

“I have been a musician my whole life,” he said.

“I moved back to Mount Gambier in 2017 after studying a bachelor in music to make a record from my own bedroom.

“The whole process was quite new as I had not done anything like it before.”

Mr Gustavsson said most of the techniques he used while recording were self-taught.

“I did not major in studio recording, but I was exposed to the techniques through surrounding university friends,” he said.

“I picked up a lot through observation.

“I also bought books from the university book store which were on sale for around $10 and read them front to back.”

While at university Mr Gustavsson said he started a band which won a national campus band competition in 2014.

“This band ended up breaking up which is when I started working on my own,” he said.

Mr Gustavsson said the record was written about everywhere he traveled.

“When I moved back home I sold my car at the time to buy a bunch of studio gear,” he said.

“I think this record definitely has a theme to it.

“It mostly surroundings love, life and death and is based around personal experiences.”

With Mr Gustavsson’s first single About Everything recently released last week, his EP Corduroy Spaceship & The Custard Gumboot will be released on April 19.

“The name Custard Gumboot holds a lot of meaning to me but is also a way of drawing the audience’s attention,” he said.

“It just reminds of my close residential college friend Eliza – who is probably one of the kookiest people I have ever met.

“A friend of ours had just been to a music festival and bought some gumboots so I though it would be funny to fill his gumboots with custard and surprise him.

“We ended up pouring the custard on Eliza and the name is now a fond memory.”

Mr Gustavsson’s single and EP can be found on all online streaming platforms including Spotify and Apple Music.
