New president at helm

WOMAN POWER: Mount Gambier resident Kathy Ridley has become the first female president for the Mount Gambier sub-section of the Naval Association of Australia.

IT IS all about “woman power” at one of the city’s community groups with the first female president stepping into position recently.

Hoping to encourage younger members to join, the local woman said she is looking forward to learning the ropes and connecting with the community.

Former Navy writer Kathy Ridley was recently announced as president of the Mount Gambier sub-section of the Naval Association of Australia.

Part of the association for the past 25 years, the local resident has taken a step up to lead the group of 27 full-time members and 31 club members.

Originally chartered on May 2, 1959, the Mount Gambier sub-section boasts significant living history with two members recipients of the prestigious Meritorious Service Medal and five life members, of which two are World War II veterans and one a Korean veteran.

Undertaking service with the Navy herself for eight years with HMAS Kuttabull as a writer, overseeing the management and processing of accounts, Ms Ridley said it was great to continue a connection with the Navy through the group.

“I loved the Navy, it was one of those experiences you cannot get anywhere else,” she said.

“When I left I also received a commendation, which was a fantastic way to end my time.

“However, when I came back to Mount Gambier everything felt different, but the group here made me feel comfortable and at ease.

“It was nice to be around former sailors and talk to them about their time in the Navy.”

Now 25 years later and after seeing many others take up presidency, Ms Ridley said it was her time to take on the role.

“Having only been in the role for three weeks, I have not had much time to think through my plans, but I have been told the first year will be spent finding my feet, the second is when you start figuring out what you can achieve and the third when you go out and make it happen,” she said.

“However, I am looking forward to learning the ropes and will hopefully encourage more younger people to join the group.”

Showcasing “woman power” in the group, member Leanne Dunn will also take on the position of first female assistant returning officer/auditor.

“It is great to see females take up these roles, I think it will be a good change for the group,” Ms Ridley said.
