VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Mount Gambier Fundraising Branch of Cancer Council SA president Louise Wheller has put the call out for more volunteers to join the local committee and help raise money for cancer patients in regional South Australia.

RAISING thousands of dollars over the years for cancer patients across the state, the Mount Gambier Fundraising Branch of Cancer Council SA is now on the hunt for more volunteers to continue its mission to help those in need.

Since 2007, the local group has raised a total of $154,600 for the upkeep of the Greenhill and Flinders lodges in Adelaide, where regional country patients stay during treatment.

However, with committee numbers continuing to dwindle and current president Louise Wheller stepping down from the position in a month, the group is putting a call out for any interested volunteers.

“When we have had fundraising events such as Melbourne Cup luncheons, it is really difficult because we don’t have many people available to help out,” Ms Wheller said.

“It is to the point now that there are only around three of us that can run the day as the majority of members have full-time employment.”

Passionate about the cause and determined to keep fundraising, Ms Wheller said although the money does not stay locally, it does help many residents in the region who are currently undergoing treatment in Adelaide.

“I know a lot of people want the money donated to stay in the city, but if it does not go to Adelaide then there will not be anywhere for cancer patients to stay,” she said.

“The remaining money goes towards research and education, which is also very important and will hopefully help to one day find a cure for cancer and save many lives.”

Meeting monthly for around one hour and volunteering when available for fundraising events, Ms Wheller said it was not a demanding position.

“We are a fairly relaxed committee and do have a lot of fun, but we have got to stage where we have cancelled our badge day because we just don’t have the people,” she said.

“It is a great opportunity to contribute to a wonderful cause and makes people hugely aware of the impact cancer has on families and how helpful Cancer Council SA is.

“It would be lovely to see some new people join.”

The committee will hold its annual general meeting on March 28 at the Blue Lake Golf Links from 5.30pm.

Call Ms Wheller on 0418 844 813 or her husband Ian on 0439 813 222 for more information about joining the committee.
