SCHOOL EVENT: Yahl Primary School Year 6 and 7 students Mickey, Jack, Alex, Will, Abbey, Jedda and Oriana get ready for the school’s biannual spring fair today.

YAHL Primary School students will put their business skills to the test today as they take part in the school’s biannual spring fair.

Working in groups, Year 6 and 7 students created their own “business” to sell products or activities at the event.

Coming up with their own ideas and creating a business plan, which includes pricing, main competitors and how to attract customers, teacher Andrew McGregor said he was proud of what the students had achieved.

“It is a great way for them to think about business and what will make them the most successful stall on the day,” he said.

“Plus it has really developed their teamwork and research skills.”

Helping to gain sponsorship and prizes for the fair, Year 6 student Jedda spent time contacting local businesses and asking for support.

“My mum, brother and I walked down the main street and asked any businesses if they could donate something,”she said.

“I was not too nervous doing it and they were all very kind, giving us handbags, gift vouchers and almost $1000.”

Eager to see how much money they can raise this Friday at the fair with their escape room activity, Year 6 students Alex and Will were excited.

“The escape room will start off with a riddle and include lots of puzzles people have to solve,” Alex said.

“We have spent the last three months creating it all and it has been a lot of fun.”

As a school event, the other classes will also have stalls and activities on offer for all to enjoy.

“The teachers and students are very thankful to parents and friends who have volunteered to support the spring fair as well as the generous donations from local businesses,” Mr McGregor said.

“It is fantastic to see everyone coming together to support the event.”

The Yahl School Spring Fair will take place today from 3.30pm to 7pm.
