MOUNT GAMBIER CATTLE

Wednesday, March 2

Agents yarded 638 head of live weight and open auction cattle with a fall in numbers of nearly 200 head on the previous sale.

These sold to the usual field of trade and processor buyers along with a number of active feeder orders.

Quality fell week on week with a mixed offering coming forward highlighted by some excellent vealers as the market ranged from firm to dearer in price.

The good quality vealers were only small in number as steers reached 598c and the heifers 580c/kg.

There were insufficient yearling cattle to attract trade interest with feeders actively seeking these as the steers ranged from 525c to 578c as the heifer portion made from 523c to 536c/kg.

Grown steers to the trade made from mainly 432c to 454c with a single pen of heavy bullocks making 438c/kg.

Feeders were active here from 492c to 585c on lighter weights and from 460c to 482c/kg on the heavier pens.

Grown heifers to the trade returned from 427c to 470c for lighter types with the heavier pens making from 438c to 478c with feeders operating here from 406c to 508c/kg.

Manufacturing steers ranged from 310c to 365c/kg.

Heavy cows received some strong competition as they ranged from 328c to 374c to the trade with the same buyers seeking lighter types from 222c to 260c with feeders active here from 348c to 390c/kg.

Bulls made from 305c to 332c/kg.

NARACOORTE CATTLE

Tuesday, March 1

Numbers fell sharply as agents yarded 906 head of liveweight and open auction cattle.

These sold to the usual field of trade and processor buyers along with feeder and restocker orders.

Quality fell away this week with less weight and condition on offer, which saw some good competition on the better lots while some secondary pens struggled in comparison.

Pricing was mainly a little better this week with the majority of the market selling to improved rates.

Vealer numbers were small with a high of 570c/kg being reached for heifers.

Yearling steers to the trade made from 472c to 530c to lift 6c, with similar heifers making from 420c to 540c/kg.

Feeders sought steers from 490c to 585c, and they paid from 484c to 563c/kg for their heifers purchases.

Restockers were operating from 560c to 622c for steers, and from 508c to 574c/kg for the heifers.

Grown steers and bullocks were small in number as they ranged from 468c to 485c, with feeder activity from 352c to 526c/kg.

The grown heifers to the trade made from 366c to 460c, as feeders were operating from 333c to 499c/kg.

Heavy weight cows lifted up in price by 9c, as they made from 330c to 360c/kg to the trade.

The light weight types sold to 318c, with strong feeder competition on light weight lots from 254c to 377c/kg.

Heavy weight bulls made from 286c to 340c/kg.

The light weight types to feed made from 380c to 500c/kg.

NARACOORTE SHEEP AND LAMB

Tuesday, March 1

Lamb numbers fell as sheep numbers rose this week to give an overall lift as agents yarded 3,773 lambs and 2,642 sheep to total a combined 6,415 head.

The usual field of trade and processor buyers along with a number of restockers were active.

Quality was very mixed ranging from the extra heavy lots down to lightweight stores with everything in between spread over the pens.

The market received some good competition from the buying group to sell to dearer rates this week with lambs $2 to $8 better and the sheep $8 to $15/head dearer.

Light lambs went mainly to restockers from $64 to $158 with the light trade lambs making from $158 to $168/head.

Trade-weight 3 score lambs made from $176 to $197/head to range from mainly 760c to 800c/kg cwt.

Heavy lambs returned from $199 to $230 with the extra heavy lots making from $236 to the market high of $260/head.

Hoggets ranged from $120 to $144 with the light sheep making from $88 to $109/head.

Medium weighted lots made from $113 to $145 as heavy sheep made from $144 to the high of $199/head.

Rams sold from $50 to $126/head.

MILLICENT CATTLE

Tuesday, March 2

Agents yarded 175 liveweight and 21 open auction cattle at the Millicent Saleyards this Wednesday March 2.

This was a decrease in 246 head on the previous yarding.

The quality of the yarding was very good and sold to a firm trend with a couple of regular buyers absent.

Vealer steers sold from 423 c/kg to a top of 540 c/kg and heifers at 401 c/kg to 572 c/kg.

Yearling steers sold from 410 c/kg to 578 c/kg, with heifers ranging from 430 c/kg to 592 c/kg.

Finished steers sold from 400 c/kg to 545 c/kg.

This category sold with a firm trend with the previous market.

Grown heifers were too few to quote.

Light cows returned 350 c/kg to 392 c/kg with heavier cows selling from 140 c/kg to 390 c/kg.

Seven bulls returned 240 c/kg to 400 c/kg.
