MOUNT GAMBIER LAMB AND SHEEP:

Wednesday January 19

Numbers rose as agents yarded 3,349 lambs and 226 sheep to total a combined 3,575 head overall.

These sold to a larger field of trade and processor buyers along with a number of active restockers.

Quality was mixed ranging from well presented heavy shorn lambs to light woolly types needing the attention of a shearer with everything in between on offer as the market ranged from firm to slightly easier in price.

Light lambs to the trade made from $158 to $164 with some strong restocker interest here as they purchased a large number from $62 to $162 for light lambs and from $168 to $187/head for those with better frame and conditioning.

Trade weight lambs were scarce as they sold to $175 with heavy lambs making from $186 to $196/head with most sales ranging from 750c to 800c/kg cwt.

Extra heavy lambs returned vendors from $200 to $224/head.

Hoggets made from $160 to $170 as light sheep made from $93 to $120/head. Heavy sheep ranged from $145 to $165 as a single pen of wethers returned $140 and rams made from $20 to $80/head.

MOUNT GAMBIER CATTLE

Wednesday January 19

Numbers rose as agents yarded 678 head of liveweight and open auction cattle.

These sold to a larger field of trade and processor buyers along with feeder and restocker orders as there was some mixed competition from the buying group with Covid-19 restrictions still playing a part.

Quality lifted this week with a better conditioned offering in a mixed market for price.

Vealer steers remained steady in price as they ranged from 501c to 570c to the trade with similar heifers making from 528c to 590c/kg.

Feeder orders sought steers from 527c to 540c as restockers sought steers to 528c and heifers to 589c/kg.

Yearling steers sold to 490c to the trade as feeders operated from 495c to 560c and restockers from 427c to 550c/kg with insufficient yearling heifers to quote.

Grown steers and bullocks were mostly of lighter weights with the trade active from 438c to 482c and feeders from 460c to 510c as the grown heifers to the trade made from 390c to 455c with feeder support to 350c as manufacturing steers ranged from 320c to 394c/kg.

Heavy cows lost 7c as they made from 310c to 360c to the trade with the lighter types making from 249c to 290c with feeder activity here from mainly 285c to 357c with an isolated sale reaching 500c/kg.

The bull offering more then tripled in number with an extra buyer helping these lift up to 30c as they made from 315c to 346c to the trade with lightweights to feed on topping at 534c/kg.

NARACOORTE SHEEP AND LAMB:

Tuesday January 18

Numbers rose as agents yarded 1,692 lambs and 861 sheep to total 2,553 head overall.

These sold to a larger field of trade and processor buyers along with a number of active restocker orders.

Quality was mixed with only a small number of heavy lambs with weight and condition as the lambs sold to better rates this week.

Light lambs to the trade ranged from $108 to $155 with the light trade lambs sold up to $170/head.

Restockers turned out a significant number as they sought light lambs from $63 to $150 and they paid from $160 to $177/head for those with better conditioning.

Trade weight 3 score lambs were small in number as they returned from $176 to $186/head as around the 750c/kg cwt area.

Heavy lambs made from $180 to $204 with the extra heavy pens making from $200 to the market high of $224/head on a limited supply.

Hoggets made from $107 to $145 as light sheep ranged from $57 to $88/head.

Medium weighted sheep returned from $98 to $122 with the heavy lots making from $131 to $170 as rams returned from $55 to $104/head.

NARACOORTE CATTLE

Tuesday January 18

Numbers rose a little as agents yarded 233 head of liveweight and open auction cattle.

These sold to a larger field of trade and processor buyers, however not all of these were active with the small number that came forward.

Covid restrictions continue to have an effect as most meatworks are still operating at reduced rates.

Quality improved this week with more condition across the pens as the market sold to mainly dearer levels.

A small number of vealers came forward with these selling to a high of 562c/kg.

Yearling steers to the trade made up to 530c, with feeders active from 488c to also 530c, with some restockers operating to 550c/kg.

Yearling heifers to the trade lifted 10c, as they made from 480c to 520c, with feeders purchasing to 472c, and restockers from 480c to 586c/kg.

Grown steers ranged from 380c to 417c/kg.

The grown heifers made from 414c to 470c, with some restocker activity from 426c to 438c/kg.

Heavy weight cows returned from 300c to 342c to be up to 3c/kg better.

The light weight types made from 245c to 285c, with restockers

active to 350c/kg. A solitary heavy weight bull made 320c, while light weights made to 384c/kg.
