Haymakers awarded for crop

LOOKING GOOD: Simon Allen from Keith took the award for the best lucerne hay visual score in the 2020-21 Feed Central National Hay Quality awards.

HAYMAKERS from across South Australia have been awarded honours in the 2020-21 Feed Central National Hay Quality awards.

The winners were announced this week as part of a Feed Central webinar, which also included a seasonal outlook.

Simon Allen from Allen’s Warrawee Park in Keith, won an award for the best lucerne hay visual score.

While Riley McNicol and Anthony Swan from Mill Park Stud Meningie, won an award for the best cereal hay feed test analysis.

Other South Australian winners included David Mitchell from Chelwood Farming in Mintaro and

Danny Steer from JD, BM and DJ Steer, Lameroo.

Feed Central general manager Cieran Maxwell said it had been a tough year for growers but the award winners had done their best in trying circumstances.

“This has been one of the toughest seasons we’ve had in a long time in regards to consistency and quality which made it a difficult year for awards,” Mr Maxwell said.

“Anyone who has produced good quality hay this season has succeeded in very challenging conditions and deserves to be congratulated for what they have achieved.”

Some award categories were combined and amended to reflect the tough growing conditions.
