AGRICULTURE students from a leading Adelaide independent school steered their way to success at the Mount Gambier A&H Society Spring Show.

Eleven Westminster School Year 10 and 11 students with two steers competed in competitions held on October 19 as a start to the show.

Involved in the show for the past three years as part of the school’s renowned agriculture program, the team proved they are the ones to beat, winning awards in five different sections, including grand champion steer, reserve champion steer, best presented steer, champion novice handler and second and fourth placings in the experienced handler category.

Year 11 student Jessica Bullock, who won champion novice handler, was thrilled with her result.

“Working with animals is something I really enjoy and I’m very happy and surprised to win an award,” she said.

“I’m very proud to be part of this year’s Mount Gambier show team and to also share in the excellent results we achieved as a group.

“We worked really hard to prepare the steers for the show – this included washing, handling, grooming, feeding and setting up for judging.”

Agriculture curriculum leader Sarah Truran, who provided guidance to this year’s show team, said she was impressed with the students’ success.

“Watching our students work so passionately for months in advance for the show event and then see them achieve such exceptional results is very pleasing,” she said.

Westminster School was one of nine schools to participate in the steer competitions with the Westminster show team taking out the major awards.
